In partnership with “Cartooning for Peace”, once a week ARTE is publishing a press cartoon on events unfolding in the Arab world by illustrators involved in the various countries, but also by western cartoonists.
“Cartooning for Peace” is an initiative that originated on the 16th of October 2006 at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York after several meetings between then-General Secretary Kofi Annan and French cartoonist Plantu. On that day, twelve of the best-known illustrators from the international press met to discuss the role of cartoons and caricature as means of expression and immediate communication – with no language barriers – in promoting tolerance and peace. Since then, the group’s exhibitions have circled the globe and the number of cartoonists joining in continues to rise (90 illustrators from 40 different countries to date).
